7.3 Moral repair

In the US, when we talk about reparations, we’re talking about money. Either giving it directly to groups of people whose ancestors suffered oppression in the past, or putting it into programs for them.

But however we decide to make reparations, if we ever do decide to do that, there’s a pre-requisite. Because just putting money into making life better for oppressed groups is not enough…

Not if the oppression continues.

What our country needs to do is first of all to make…

Moral reparation.

What’s that?

It’s…

Moral transformation.

It means…

We do whatever it takes to become the kind of people who could never again commit the sins of the past.

Never again genocide or slavery. Never again mass suffering.

And in transforming ourselves, we’d transform our nation. Then we’d not tolerate the sins of the present. We’d put a stop all the suffering that’s going on now.

Does this sound too good to be possible? Maybe. But it’s what we need. And…

Just getting to work on it makes us better people.
