4.5 The best kind of reparation: moral transformation

Talk of reparations to make up for injustice of the past directed against groups of people who have been oppressed for long years during the history of our country usually focuses on financial reparations.

But I think there is something that is a pre-requisite. Because just putting money into making life better for oppressed groups is not enough, not if the oppression continues.

It seems to me what our country needs is to commit to…

Moral reparation.

Which means that the majority of us would the kind of self-development and political development it would take so that…

We would become the kind of nation that could not ever again practice genocide or slavery or any kind of oppression against any group of people.

Hard to imagine? Sure. But worth trying for. Yes. Because this kind of deep transformation would be good for everyone involved.

If a nation can be said to love itself, not in the tribal way, the self-aggrandizing, arrogant way, but in the moral way, then this would be the way to get to national self-love.
