4.1 Break the tribal spell
There are people who get really good at playing the tribal game so they can benefit themselves at the expense of others.
But…
That’s not us.
We who are serious political activists study tribal fundamentalism so we can…
Break its grip.
And…
Dethrone it.
What we do is…
Play against the game.
And by our example we show others that this is a good way to live, a very good way to live.
And we make it clear that if we as a species do not transcend tribal fundamentalism, if we can’t create a trans-tribal world for ourselves, then we’re finished.
On the one hand, when you first break the spell of tribalism it can be a shock to your system because we’re all tribal by birth. Tribalism is the core of our DNA. Breaking with it is a radical act. Even painful.
But once you’ve broken the spell, it’s very different. Of course there’s a lot of hard work in opposing tribalism, because it’s the dominant force in our human world.
At the same time, playing against the game brings with it a kind of…
Mischievous fun.
Serious fun, but fun nonetheless.
Not only do we get to take a serious stand against tribal behaviors but we get to mess with them. We get to pull the rug out from under them. We get to sabotage them.
I find that there’s something deeply satisfying in becoming better and better at opposing the one thing that more than any other is driving us down the road to extinction.
And my wish is that every activist gets to experience the deep pleasure in doing this kind of deep, genomic activism.
